A web based 3D visualiser

Disrupting the DIY Market

Digital tools for the home improver

After exploring a proof of concept that customers would be more likely to finish a home improvement project if they could visualise the results we started to develop a prototype for a bathroom design tool. Initial results from customer testing were very positive. The tool aims to help customers get the right bathroom design by delivering contextual advice and error dialog. The customer can design a new bathroom based on their room sizes then output a high resolution 360 image that can be shared with their friend and family network.

Background

The parent company of B&Q, Screwfix and Castorama, Kingfisher saw an opportunity where digital hadn’t yet made any big waves. Kingfisher set up a digital incubator with the help of Accenture and Fjord. I was one of the early designers helping define a product roadmap for the initiative.

We looked at the road map of a DIY project from home inspiration, to handy man sourcing, interior design consulting to visualising and initiating a DIY project and maintaining a home. We found no single company that inspired to serve up a service that covered the entire journey nor did we find a service that joined services that concerned the home. This was Kingfishers ambition.

Research

A define phase helped understand the current problems homeowner’s had when it came to DIY in their own home. One of these problems was the ability to visualise any design changes in the home. In particular when it came to bathrooms and kitchens people believed these projects to be to complicated and lacked the confidence to begin one as a DIY project.

We sought to create a service that educated homeowners in DIY, giving them the confidence they needed. We begun mapping out a visual tool that would guide them in a new project whether it be changing the taps on a sink or tiling an entire bathroom.

We believe that a customer who uses a visualisation tool
are more likely to start a home improvement project.

We sought to understand how different people use their bathrooms and how we could connect those uses to better bathroom solutions that were both practical and attractive.

Design concept

We simplified our concept down to a single customer journey for our MVP. That journey gave the customer the ability to filter their bathroom use surfacing products and bathroom layouts for a whole bathroom redesign project.

Approach

A define phase helped understand the current problems homeowner’s had when it came to DIY in their own home. One of these problems was the ability to visualise any design changes in the home. In particular when it came to bathrooms and kitchens people believed these projects to be to complicated and lacked the confidence to begin one as a DIY project.

We sought to create a service that educated homeowners in DIY, giving them the confidence they needed. We begun mapping out a visual tool that would guide them in a new project whether it be changing the taps on a sink or tiling an entire bathroom.

Ideation Development

When understanding our different types of customers and their degree of DIY understanding we set out to design a step by step tool that surfaced relevant advice and products. While talking to DIY experts we understood the required information needed to start a project. This was the first stage of our tool, getting a rough idea of a homeowners space.

Animating a quick guide on the process made customers feel like they had a good understanding of the idea of the tool.

Enhancements

Confident from our initial customer feedback we sought to develop our visualiser with more mobile features, adding a project shopping list and enhancing our visualiser tool with more product feedback and expert advice.

I want to be able to edit my bathroom designs on my phone so I can have different options to show people when I’m not at home.

Customer research

The customer can render their new bathroom design with
our 360 renderer to share and consider. Instead of partnering
with a third party renderer we built our own giving us complete
control over textures, product features, lighting & render speed.
